Kentucky Derby 2020 Results: Horses, Odds, Start Time, Winning Payouts, and How to Watch the Race
After being postponed for several months due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Kentucky Derby 2020 arrives on Saturday evening. There will be another great group of contenders with several horses amongst potential favorites to win. That said, nothing’s ever certain, as a longshot could always steal the show. Here’s a look at the upcoming Derby details including horses’ odds, start time, and how you can watch the race.
Derby Contenders: Tiz the Law leading all horses in latest odds
The Kentucky Derby is typically the first event of the Triple Crown schedule for horse racing. However, it will go second in 2020, as it follows the Belmont Stakes. The number of contenders tends to vary by year and is subject to change due to various reasons such as horses that are a scratch due to injury or other issues.
As of Tuesday (Sept. 1), a total of 18 horses were listed on the official Kentucky Derby post positions. Leading the way in terms of favorites to win is Tiz the Law (3-5) at the No. 17 post. The No. 16 post will have Honor A.P. which holds the second-best odds (5-1), followed by Authentic at No. 18 post with 8-1 odds.
Tiz the Law won this year’s Belmont Stakes back in June. In unprecedented fashion, Belmont took place ahead of the Kentucky Derby. It now sets up Tiz the Law for a second win of three on Saturday at the Derby.
The Belmont winner was trained by Barclay Tagg and will have Manny Franco as jockey. Meanwhile, Authentic brings back the team of John Velazquez (jockey) and the famous Bob Baffert (trainer). Baffert also trained Thousand Words.
As of Tuesday, no horses beyond those three contenders had odds better than 15-1 to win the race, making for some intriguing possibilities on betting slips.

Kentucky Derby 2020 date, time, and how to watch
While the Kentucky Derby typically takes place in early May, that wasn’t the case in 2020. The coronavirus pandemic pretty much put all sports on pause. However, many of them are returning to action, or formulating plans for how to safely start their seasons. The NBA has been operating with a bubble in Florida for its playoffs which has worked successfully so far.
Churchill Downs is the annual site for the thoroughbred race. However, this year’s edition will have a different look and feel due to jockeys following COVID-19 safety measures. In addition, this Kentucky Derby will take place live with no fans in attendance to cheer from the stands or trackside.
The 2020 Kentucky Derby is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 5. Race coverage for the 146th edition of the event begins at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time on NBC, NBCSports.com, and the NBC Sports app. However, those who want to skip all the pre-Derby coverage, can start watching around 6:30 p.m. ET or a bit later, as the official post time is approximately 7:01 p.m. ET.
As mentioned, Belmont Stakes took place back in June as the first leg of the Triple Crown. Saturday’s Kentucky Derby will be the second of the three races. Meanwhile, the Preakness is set to take place on Oct. 3 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. Will Tiz the Law become a historic horse winning a Triple Crown under unusual circumstances?
