WWE Royal Rumble 2022 Results: Ronda Rousey Returns, Lashley Wins Championship on Road to WrestleMania
The WWE Royal Rumble 2022 results brought some exciting action and some major surprises as the Road to WrestleMania unfolded. The latest pay-per-view took place Saturday night from St. Louis with the men’s and women’s Royal Rumble matches among the featured bouts. It brought back former WWE Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey. In addition, fans saw a battle of the beasts with a shocking turn as Lashley took on Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship, although Brock may have the final say in the matter.
Ronda Rousey returns, Lashley gets assist
One of the biggest surprises of the night during the WWE Royal Rumble 2022 results came with the women’s Rumble match. 30 superstars battled it out for a shot to headline WrestleMania. Among the returning legends were greats like Michelle McCool, The Bella Twins, Lita, and Mickie James. The Boss Sasha Banks made her big return to the match following a recent injury.
However, the big surprise came late in the matchup as Ronda Rousey made her much-anticipated return to the ring after losing the championship at WrestleMania 35. The match came down to a final four of Rousey, Shayna Baszler, Bianca Belair, and Charlotte Flair. Ultimately it came down to Rousey vs. Flair, with Ronda able to grab Charlotte by the leg near the ring corner and toss her out over the top ropes.
Earlier this week, we reported that Rousey was a +1400 favorite in the Royal Rumble odds to win the match. Those odds got tighter as the match drew closer, though.
Another major surprise arrived as Bobby Lashley battled Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship. At one point, the two men bumped into the referee in the ring corner. Moments later, Brock swung Lashley into the ref by accident, knocking the ref out. That allowed interference from Roman Reigns who Paul Heyman handed the championship belt to.
Reigns clocked Brock Lesnar with the belt, allowing Lashley to make a pinfall cover as a new referee arrived. With that, Lashley is the new champion and Heyman is once again advocating for Roman Reigns.
WWE Royal Rumble 2022 results
The WWE Royal Rumble 2022 results include several other titles on the line. The first match of the event featured Roman Reigns defending the Universal Championship against former Shield brother Seth Rollins. Rollins entered through the crowd to the Shield theme music in full gear. While their match seemed evenly contested, for the most part, Roman eventually became fed up with Rollins’ in-ring antics.
At one point, Reigns locked on a chokehold. With Rollins fading on the mat, he managed to finally get one hand onto the bottom rope. The ref called for Reigns to break the hold. He refused to, and after a five-count, Reigns was disqualified. Following the loss by DQ, Reigns took a steel chair to take out his frustrations on Seth some more.
Following the women’s Royal Rumble match, fans got to see Becky Lynch face another test as champion. This time the WWE Raw Women’s Champion had to take on Doudrop. Becky looked like she might be done for at one point, but escaped a pinfall. However, after a 13-minute battle, Becky finally finished off Doudrop to retain the title.
Ahead of the men’s Royal Rumble match, fans watched Edge and Beth Phoenix take on Miz and Maryse in a mixed tag match. A double Glam-Slam from Beth Phoenix and Edge took out Maryse and The Miz. That gave the “Grit Couple” the latest win in this feud between the husband-wife teams.
The grand finale was the Men’s Royal Rumble match. While it featured many worthy contenders including Kevin Owens, Big E, and Randy Orton, it ultimately came down to two men. Entering the match at No. 30 was Brock Lesnar, who was on a mission after losing his title earlier in the night.
The Beast cleared the ring of various opponents, leaving just Drew McIntyre. While Drew put up a good fight for a short bit, Lesnar picked up McIntyre and tossed him out for the win. The show closed with Brock pointing towards the WrestleMania banner with the commentators questioning who he’ll choose to face.
