Former Lions Star RB Reaches Out To Dan Campbell – Wants To Suit Up Again In Detroit

Jamaal Williams wants another shot in the NFL—and he knows exactly where he’d like to play.

The former Detroit Lions running back reached out directly to head coach Dan Campbell, letting him know that he’s working toward a comeback and would love the opportunity to return to Detroit.

The NY Post reports that Campbell told Williams the Lions are set at running back for now, but he would keep him in mind if things change.

While the door may not be open at the moment for Williams to suit up again in Motown, Williams’ enthusiasm is not diminishing.

“Football’s my love, man,” Williams said. “I want to finish off right. It’s just something about knowing what your first love is and mine so happened to be a professional sport, and knowing that you’re not going to be able to play it forever I just want to make sure that I have no regrets on me working hard, doing what I need to do to get to my dream one more time.”

Williams spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons in Detroit, quickly becoming one of the most beloved players in the Motor City. His personality, energy, and genuine love for Detroit made him a fan favorite—and his production wasn’t bad either.

In 2021, Williams rushed for 601 yards and 3 touchdowns on 153 carries while adding 157 receiving yards.

Then came his breakout 2022 season, when Williams ran for 1,066 yards and 17 touchdowns on 262 carries. Those 17 rushing touchdowns led the NFL and set a Lions franchise record at the time.

In two seasons with Detroit, Williams totaled 1,667 rushing yards and 20 rushing touchdowns.

Now 31, Williams hasn’t suited up since 2024 and is looking for one more opportunity – and apparently, Detroit is still where his heart is.
