Dallas Cowboys sign Andy Dalton, Bears Mitch Trubisky, Lions Jarrad Davis both denied 2021 club options
Sports may be on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, Saturday was a busy day in terms of NFL News.
Cowboys sign Andy Dalton
Andy Dalton is about to become a member of the Dallas Cowboys. Yeah, I don’t get it either.
Dalton, who has been the starting QB in Cincinnati for the last decade, will now sign a one-year deal to reportedly back up Dak Prescott in Dallas.
NFL guru Ian Rapoport broke the news (via Mike Garafolo) on Saturday evening.
“Interesting signing to secure a top backup. But… before anyone asks, #Cowboys source says this has nothing to do with Dak Prescott. This is just about Dalton wanting to be back in Dallas and the #Cowboys wanting a strong option in case of injury. Simple.“
QB controversy ahead? Probably not. Nevertheless, this is a deal not many NFL experts seen coming.
Bears decline QB Mitch Trubisky’s 5th-year option for 2021 season
In other NFL news, the Chicago Bears may be ready to make a fresh break from QB Mitch Trubisky.
The Bears announced that they will not give Mitch the fifth year of his five year deal in 2021.
Many fans and experts saw this coming right after the Bears signed Nick Foles this past offseason.
Trubisky’s 2021 option would’ve paid him $24.8 million – and having two QB’s on the roster making over $20 million per season wasn’t going to happen.
Without seeing one pass from Foles as of yet in a Bears uniform, the Bears front office has seemingly tipped their hat in which direction they are ready to go in.
Lions opt out of 2021 year with Jarrad Davis
In what is a bit of a surprise move, the Lions will most likely not be bringing back linebacker Jarrad Davis in 2021.
Detroit announced on Saturday that they will not pick up Davis’ club option following the 2020 season.
Davis showed a lot of promise early on in Detriot, however, with the growing linebackers on their roster, including Jahlani Tavai, and the signings of Reggie Ragland, Elijah Lee and Jamie Collins, it seems Detroit has decided to move on from Davis following this season.
One thing to keep in mind – just because the Lions declined Davis’ fifth yer option, they can negotiate with Davis on a new deal when the season is over.
The same can be said for Trubisky and the Bears. Odds are they will each move on to a different team but the clubs may be more than interested in keeping these players – just at a cheaper rate.
