Detroit Tigers: With Cron Out, Boyd Struggling, It Is Time To Call Up Casey Mize, Spencer Torkelson
In case you haven’t noticed, the Detroit Tigers are in the playoff hunt. The 50,000 to 1 longshot Tigers may not have the depth to shock the world and win the 2020 World Series, but they have shown after the first 3 weeks of the season that they can contend for the AL Central crown.
Anything is possible in 2020
The 60-game sprint to the MLB postseason is in full gear. With the long-shot Detroit Tigers sitting one game out of first place in the AL Central, will they make any moves at the trade deadline?
A more intriguing question may be will the Tigers bring up some of their young talent for the final stretch run?
Mize, Tork time?
With first baseman CJ Cron on the IL and Matthew Boyd struggling on the hill, is it time for Detroit to reach into their highly praised farm system?
The Tigers have two of the top prospects in all of MLB waiting in the wings in Casey Mize and Spencer Torkelson. Both were flat out beasts in college, that we know. But are they ready for the big show? Absolutely!
In a shortened season and the team in need, the real question is why WOULDN’T they bring these guys up?
Tork destroyed Pac-12 baseball with a career .337 avg and 54 home runs in his three seasons.
As for Mize, everyone from big-time scouts to former Tiger pitching stars Jack Morris and Dan Petry have all said Mize is “major league ready.”
Sometimes getting thrown right into the fire so to speak is the best thing for a youngster.
Just look at how good Ronald Acuna did for the Braves after he was called up in April of 2018.
At the tender age of 20, Acuna stepped in for Atlanta and has never looked back. This isn’t a throw-away season for the Tigers. In fact, a shortened season with great results could be the perfect launching pad for these two.
Call them up Gardy, call them up.
