NFL Coach of the Year Odds 2022 Update: Lions Dan Campbell Goes From Dark Horse To A Betting Favorite

The odds of a coach winning NFL Coach of the Year after a team starts 1-6 are pretty low. In fact, most would say they are zero. Well, if the Detroit Lions make the postseason, then it would be hard to argue that Dan Campbell shouldn’t be in the mix of serious contenders.

Lions 3-0 December Record Has Team in Postseason Hunt

After 8 weeks of football, Lions fans were already once again thinking about yet another high-draft pick. Sitting at 1-6 and their bye week in the rearview mirror, the last thing fans were thinking of was a postseason berth. Well, dare to dream Motown, if the Leos win their final three games, they could become just the second team in the history of the NFL to make the playoffs following a 1-6 start.

Detroit won their third straight game Sunday when they defeated the NY Jets 20-17. Now at 7-7, they are just one-half game out of the postseason in the NFC. With their remaining games vs. teams all under .500 in Carolina, Chicago, and Green Bay, with a little luck, the Lions could be postseason bound.

Updated NFL Coach of the Year Odds

When Dan Campbell was hired by the Lions back in Jan of 2021, not many knew who he was. Following his first press conference, EVERYONE in Detroit was excited. His no-nonsense attitude won everyone over from the start.

Now in year two of his six-year deal, Campbell and his knee-biting attitude seem to have rubbed off on the Lions as they have become tough as nails, especially on defense.

After a 1-6 start, the Lions have finished 6-1 in their last 7 games and are arguably the hottest team in the NFL. When asked about winning the coach of the year award Campbell wants to hear nothing on the subject. All he wants for his team and the fans is to make the postseason – and win at least one game, if not the Super Bowl.

While that may not happen this season, fans in Detroit have a lot to be excited for in the future. This team is stacked.

It is interesting though when you think about it, Campbell went from a +2000 longshot in August, to even bigger at +5500 in October. Now, DC is sitting at No. 2 overall at +400.
