Phyllis George, co-host of ‘The NFL Today,’ dies at 70

If you watched NFL football in the 1970s and 80s, you knew who Phyllis George was. George reportedly passed away earlier this week at the age of 70.

The former Miss America broke the mold and was a trendsetter for every female sportscaster that followed in her footsteps. George was an instant hit and it wasn’t because of stunning looks – it was because she knew her sports!

George rose to fame on CBS’s “The NFL Today” alongside the legendry trio of Irv Cross, Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder, and Brent Musburger.

Musburger tweeted out a message on Saturday evening saying how George “didn’t receive enough credit for opening the door for dozens of talented women who took her lead and soared.”

A family spokeswoman said George died Thursday at a Lexington, Kentucky, hospital after a long fight with a blood disorder.

Before George rose to fame with NFL fans she was crowned Miss America in 1971. George had many TV cameos in her career including a stint in the hit movie “Meet the Parents.” The former first lady of Kentucky is survived by her two children.
