Babe Ruth Day – April 27, 1947
The man, the myth, the legend. Today, April 27 is National Babe Ruth Day!
While it was a somewhat sad day seeing the Babe struggle a bit following throat surgery due to cancer, it is a day to honor one of the best sluggers to ever play the game – Mr. George Herman Ruth.
Over 58,000 jammed into Yankee Stadium to honor their hero who was the Home Run King of his era.
Ruth did more than punish the baseball, he changed the game altogether. Ruth’s popularity pushed the game of baseball into the spotlight like never before.
Ruth finished his great career with 714 home runs, 2,214 RBI, and a batting average of .342.
Although Ruth was suffering from throat cancer on that day in 1947, he still managed to step up to the mic and tell the Yankee faithful how great they were. Ruth passed away one year later at the age of 53.
