Lions’ Dan Campbell Possibly Made Huge Change Against Commanders
With the Detroit Lions looking to keep pushing towards a top spot in the potseason, their head coach Dan Campbell may have done something significant for Sunday’s game at the Commanders.
The team lost a major part of the coaching staff from last season, as Ben Johnson left the offensive coordinator position to take on head coaching job with the Lions rival, the Chicago Bears.
Due to that, Campbell has a new offensive coordinator with John Morton, who has been coaching in the NFL at various teams since 1998.
However, it appeared that Morton may haven’t been performing as expected, with Campbell possibly making an on-the-fly coaching decision against the Commanders.
Campbell possibly made big move for Lions-Commanders
Based on various reports, it appears that the Detroit Lions coach had a play-call sheet in his hands and was speaking on a headset during the televised broadcast of the Lions vs. Commanders.
Along with that, various reports, including NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, suggest that Campbell might have decided to take over the playcalling during the game from Morton.
According to Garafolo, there are “indications of a disconnect between OC John Morton and the players and coaches,” and Campbell previously suggested he might taken over calling the offensive plays.
Dan Campbell’s coaching decision seemed to work for Lions
Campbell’s decision seemed to pay off for Detroit, as they pushed the pedal on the offensive against Washington. As of this writing, they held a 44-22 lead on the home team, behind spectactular play from
Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Jameson Williams.
Goff threw for 320 yards and three touchdowns with 25 completions of his 33 attempts. Williams was his top recipient, catching six passes for 119 yards and a touchdown.
On the ground, Gibbs had 15 carries for 142 yards and three touchdowns, while fellow back David Montgomery chipped in 71 yards on 15 carries.
While the Commanders are a struggling football team without quarterback Jayden Daniels, this could have shown that Campbell’s playcalling connected better with the players. That said, what could this mean for Morton’s future in Detroit, as this is just one game with plenty more to go.
Whether there are coaching and personnel issues going on or not, the Lions remain among the top three favorites to win the Super Bowl in 2026. They currently hold +800 odds, which is behind the Eagles at +750, and Chiefs at +550.
