The road to the 2021 Kentucky Derby marches on! This Saturday the Louisiana Derby is scheduled to take place from the Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots, in New Orleans, LA. With a $1 million purse on the line, this race is one of the biggest leading up to derby day in May.

What would a stake race be nowadays without a Bob Baffert horse or two? On the heels of having the winner in last week’s Rebel Stakes with Concert Tour, Baffert will be limited to just a spectator in the Louisiana Derby on Saturday as none of his prospective horses are in the race.
However, no Baffert, no problem. This year’s edition of the Louisiana Derby will be chock full of Derby contenders. In fact, three of the top ten horses in the “Road to the Kentucky Derby” point standings will be going at it head-to-head.
This week the big favorite is Mandaloun. Trained by Brad Cox, Mandaloun leads the way as a huge favorite at +130 – or close to 8/5 odds. Right behind Mandaloun is Proxy listed at +350. Rounding out the top three is Hot Rod Charlie, who has, moved up to 3/1 as he prepares for his first career stakes race win.

As mentioned above the Louisiana Derby is one of the big races of the season. Not only is it huge for the winning horse, but the top contenders earn some very important Kentucky Derby points. With 170 qualifying points up for grabs, (100 for first place, 40 for second place, 20 for third place, and 10 for fourth) this race can help a horse on the leaderboard bubble jump right to the top.
