NFL MVP Odds 2022: Josh Allen Leads Contenders, Deshaun Watson Among Longshots
It’s almost time for the NFL regular season to kick off as the Los Angeles Rams defend their Super Bowl championship, with many other teams looking to take away that title. Sometimes, a star player’s performance is what propels a team to the big game and to that Lombardi Trophy. For the Rams, adding Matthew Stafford was the critical ingredient. While he’s amongst candidates in the NFL MVP Odds 2022, he’s ranked below several other favorites.
Allen and Mahomes among 2022 MVP favorites
Quarterbacks are typically the name of the game when it comes to MVP, which is apparent when looking at 2022 contenders. The Buffalo Bills are a team many expect to contend in the AFC once again. They were outdone by Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals last season, but a successful season from Josh Allen and company could be on the way. Allen leads all MVP contenders at +700 odds right now.
Behind Mr. Allen are several guys who are no strangers to winning the NFL MVP Award. The Kansas City Chiefs Patrick Mahomes and Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tom Brady sit at +800 odds. Brady has won the award three times in his stellar career, and a fourth would further solidify his HOF resume. Meanwhile, Mahomes is looking to follow in Brady’s footsteps. He won his first MVP in 2018 and started out at +3500 odds to win the award.
The past two NFL MVP awards went to none other than Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers. However, that didn’t translate into a Super Bowl appearance or win. Still, Rodgers finds himself at +900, tied with young LA Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert.
Burrow is tied with brand new Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson at +1400 odds. Surprisingly, Wilson has never won the award in his career. Will a change of scenery bring his first?
Watson and Taylor are among potential longshots
Looking at the list of top 17 candidates to win MVP, one notices plenty of quarterbacks. Among them is Deshaun Watson, whose off-field issues will keep him sidelined for six games. That makes it tough to put together an MVP-caliber season, but anything’s possible. Watson has +5000 odds for those interested in taking a shot at the Browns’ QB.
Another longshot at +5000 is running back Jonathan Taylor. His 2021 season saw him participate in all 17 of his team’s games, racking up 1,811 yards and 18 touchdowns on 332 rushing attempts. If he continues his upward trajectory with those stats and the Colts are amongst AFC contenders, that could put his name in the MVP discussion.
Below are some of the top MVP odds, including Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams, who is a +1600 contender as of this writing.
- Josh Allen +700
- Patrick Mahomes +800
- Tom Brady +800
- Aaron Rodgers +900
