NFL Rule Change 2020: Onside Kick Soon To Be Thing Of The Past? New Idea To Replace It Revealed
Is the NFL on the verge of a dramatic rule change? It is looking that way – or they are least mulling it over.
This proposed change has to do with the onside kick attempts. It seems that the Philadelphia Eagles have proposed a rule that would give teams an alternative option to the onside kick, and it is quite interesting.
Instead of trying to recover an onside kick, teams would have the option of attempting to convert a fourth-and-15 play from their own 25-yard line.
If the team attempting the play gets the 15 yards, they are rewarded with a first down and keep possession of the ball. The tricky part of the gamble is if they fail to pick up 15 yards or more on their one and only chance, the opposing team would take over possession from wherever the play ended.
I like it! Hey why not? The team kicking the ball seems to never recover it and at least this way the offensive team, who would have obviously just scored to get this opportunity, would be able to try and take advantage of a tired defense – all while trying to get back in the game.
The rule change will be voted upon next week (May 28) by NFL owners. Remember, teams could still onside kick the football if they chose to do so. This change would just give the offensive team an option.
For the rule change to pass, at least 24 of the 32 NFL owners would have to approve of the idea.
