NFL Trade Rumors: Potential Teams for Matthew Stafford, Deshaun Watson Include Broncos and Panthers

The landscape of the National Football League will be changing once again, with several quarterbacks expected to be headed to new teams. They are longtime Detroit Lions star Matthew Stafford and Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. The Lions are looking to rebuild and have a high draft pick, while Houston’s QB wants a new team. Here are the latest NFL trade rumors on both players.

Deshaun Watson requests trade, Texans getting lots of interest

After four seasons with the Houston Texans, Deshaun Watson wants out. The former No. 12 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft requested a trade on Thursday morning, per Adam Schefter. Watson is no slouch, and there appears to be plenty of interest in his services already.

Ian Rapoport appeared on TV to talk about the situation, saying that due to Watson’s “no-trade clause” he can control if he wants to accept the trade or not. During the segment, Rapoport also listed off several potential suitors including the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins.

He also said not to count out the Carolina Panthers, and of course the Chicago Bears. Rapoport even said the Indianapolis Colts are a possible destination, although being in the same division may make that trade tough.

Over a week ago, Sports Betting Dime presented the latest odds for Watson’s next team. Leading the way are the Carolina Panthers, a team that formerly had the versatile Cam Newton running things. Just behind the Panthers are the Dolphins, Jets, Falcons, and Broncos, all teams in need of some help.

  • Carolina Panthers +625
  • Miami Dolphins +650
  • New York Jets +700
  • Atlanta Falcons +775
  • Denver Broncos +825
  • Las Vegas Raiders +850
  • New Orleans Saints +900
  • New England Patriots +925
  • Chicago Bears +1000
  • San Francisco 49ers +1000
  • Los Angeles Rams +1500
  • Detroit Lions +1800

As Rapoport mentioned, Watson controls his future, so if he doesn’t like the team, or the deal, he can easily reject it. Stay tuned as this one continues to heat up in the coming days and weeks.

Lions moving on from Matthew Stafford

The Detroit Lions have utilized the skills of quarterback Matthew Stafford for over 10 seasons, but it’s time to change things up. The 32-year-old has been with the team since 2009, participating in 165 games during his career. However, failed attempts to make much noise in the season or postseason have led to the Lions looking to start anew.

As far as where Stafford goes next, the latest odds favor him heading to another NFC squad, the San Francisco 49ers. That’d make for an interesting move as the team was in the Super Bowl just a season ago with Jimmy Garoppolo. Also amongst contenders to land Stafford are the Colts, Patriots, Broncos, and Washington.

  • San Francisco 49ers +100
  • Indianapolis Colts +350
  • New England Patriots +500
  • Denver Broncos +600
  • Washington Football Team +750
  • Dallas Cowboys +800
  • Carolina Panthers +1000
  • Las Vegas Raiders +1200
  • Los Angeles Rams +1400

The Panthers are also in the top 10 for the latest odds, per Odds Shark. The Chicago Bears, who are division foes for the Lions, currently have +2200 odds to add him to their roster. Could the Bears snag Stafford or Watson to jumpstart their chances for more playoff success?

The Raiders, Rams, and Broncos all pop up on both guys’ odds, so there seems to be a lot of teams potentially vying for their services. Perhaps Denver will move on from Drew Lock by adding a veteran starter?

Last offseason saw some big moves, including Tom Brady leaving his longtime team, the New England Patriots. New England attempted to replace him with Cam Newton, but how do you ever replace Brady?

With the Super Bowl coming up, all attention will be on the two star QBs of the show, Brady and Patrick Mahomes. Still, many fans will also be waiting to see where Matthew Stafford and Deshaun Watson end up next as the NFL trade rumors continue!
