The road to the Kentucky Derby continues Saturday, April 1 with two of the biggest Derby prep races on the schedule with the Arkansas Derby, and the Florida Derby. These Grade 1 major prep races always play a key role heading into the annual Run for the Roses.
Florida Derby
Gulfstream Park will be the place to be for horse racing fans today as the Grade 1, $1 million Florida Derby is the final official prep race at Gulfstream Park on the road to Kentucky Derby 2023. This years field will feature 12 three-year-olds battling it out for a spot in May’s Run for the Roses.
The heavy favorite heading into the big race is Forte. The Todd Pletcher trained horse is currently the 4-5 morning line favorite, Pletcher will be aiming for his seventh win at the Florida Derby.

Arkansas Derby
The second race of the day takes place from Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas as the world-famous Arkansas Derby wraps up the night.
According to a DraftKings report, Reincarnate opened as the morning line favorite and drew a solid 8 post. Expect a battle between Reincarnate and 3-1 odds horse Red Route One from the 10 post. Both horses ran in the Grade 2 Rebel last month at Oaklawn and finished third and second respectively.
Personally, we look for Angel of Empire to make a bit of noise this evening.

Angel of Empire won the $1.25 million Arkansas Derby by 4 1/4 lengths Saturday, putting him on a path to the Kentucky Derby in May. Ridden by Flavien Prat, Angel of Empire ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.68 at Oaklawn. Sent off at 9-2 odds, he paid $11.40, $5.80 and $4.40.
