Baseball Card Collection Belonging To ‘Uncle Jimmy’ Could Be Biggest And Best Ever
If you are a fan of MLB, a card collector, or both, this story may leave you salivating.
The man known simply as “Uncle Jimmy” to his family and friends may have unknowingly left behind one of the biggest and best card collections to ever exist.
A baseball collection to marvel
James Micioni, a Boonton, New Jersey native nearly lived to be 100-years old. He never married or had children, but he had a baseball card collection to marvel at.
Micioni was a die-hard baseball fan and an avid card collector. With the New York Yankees at the top of his list of favorite teams and the late great Jackie Robinson his favorite player, his collection from a century ago is breathtaking.
Being able to collect cards from the golden era of the game, Micioni assembled a blockbuster collection that could rival anyone.
Following Micioni’s passing at the age of 97 back on March 8, an incredible discovery of baseball cards was revealed that may be worth millions.
From Ruth to Rose, Uncle Jimmy had it all
ESPN indicates that Uncle Jimmy left his stunning collection to his seven nieces and nephews.
While most of it will be sold at auction, the names on the list are staggering.
There are sets from the 1930s along with dozens of autographed cards from the likes of Ruth, Gehrig, and Rose.
“There’s a saying in the hobby that collectors are temporary custodians of history, and I think Uncle Jimmy was a prime example of that,” said Joe Orlando, president and CEO of Collectors Universe. “If you look at the type of collection that he assembled, it required a lot of work.
Micioni would regularly mail his baseball cards to teams hoping for players to autograph them and return them. Luckily for him, they often did.
Shortly after his death, his nieces and nephews ventured into Micioni’s attic and found baseball nirvana.
This mammoth collection includes six Ruth cards from the famous 1933 Goudey set.
Orlando, who helped to officially grade the cards for Professional Sports Authenticator, estimates that those half-dozen Ruth cards together are worth up to $1 million in total.
You were one of a kind, Uncle Jimmy. From one collector to anther, I must say I am in awe.
