Cleveland Indians Changing Their Name After 105 Years
The Cleveland Indians are changing their name. Per multiple reports, the Indians will be coming up with a new nickname in the very near future.
Cleveland Indians no more?
ESPN reported on Sunday that the organization is expected to announce the name change this week.
While this news is breaking at the time of this report, it is unclear whether the team will be changing the nickname immediately or following the 2021 season.
It will also be interesting to see how they come up with the new name. Possibly a fan vote or some sort of contest?
Recently the Cleveland franchise threw around different name ideas. Those included the Naps, the Cleveland Spiders (after a defunct 19th-century baseball team) or the Cleveland Rocks.
On the heels of the Washington Redskins dropping their nickname, Cleveland announced that it planned to undertake a thorough review of the Indians’ name. The team has gone by the nickname of the Indians since 1905.
Who’s next?
With several other sports teams having Native American nicknames, will they all eventually be changed? Things seem to be going in that direction.
The Atlanta Braves (MLB), Kansas City Chiefs (NFL) and Chicago Blackhawks (NHL) are other prominent professional franchises that use Native American imagery in their names and logos.
