Detroit Tigers Sign No. 1 Pick Spencer Torkelson To Record Deal

Spencer Torkelson is officially a member of the Detroit Tigers. With the way 2020 has played out so far, Tigers’ fans may see Tork in the big leagues this summer. You just never know!

Torkelson signs record deal

The Detroit Tigers have agreed to terms with their No. 1 draft pick Spencer Torkelson according to multiple sources.

The former Arizona State slugger signed a deal worth a record bonus of $8.4 million per Jim Callis of MLB.com.

That number eclipses the record set last year by Orioles’ draftee Adley Rutchsman at $8.1 million. That’s a lot of cheddar for a kid who hasn’t taken one swing in the big leagues.

Straight to the Bigs?

The odds for a player to go right from the MLB Draft to the majors are slim. However, many experts think if anyone could pull it off it’s Spencer Torkelson.

The last player to go straight from college to the majors was pitcher Mike Leake. According to CBS Sports, the last position player to pull off the feet was Joey Amalfitano, who did so in 1954 for the New York Giants.

Torkelson is big, strong, and fast. And he is getting comparisons to another MLB stud in Mike Trout.

With a 60-game season on tap, anything can happen. Who knows, Spencer Torkelson may become a household name before Tigers’ fans know it.
