Justin Verlander Returns To Detroit: Former Tigers Ace Heading Back To Motown in 2026
He’s back – and all I can say is I love this move! Justin Verlander is heading back to where it all began. The future Hall of Fame right-hander — who turns 43 on Feb. 20 — has agreed to a one-year deal worth $13 million with the Detroit Tigers, with $11 million of that salary deferred. It marks a homecoming nearly two decades after he first debuted in the Motor City back in 2005.
Now entering his 21st MLB season in 2026, Verlander’s resume already places him among baseball’s all-time great pitchers. His career highlights include three Cy Young Awards, nine All-Star selections, two ERA crowns, the 2011 American League MVP award, and a pair of World Series championships. He’s also one of only six pitchers in Major League history to throw three or more no-hitters — a testament to both his dominance and longevity.
Detroit’s rotation suddenly looks much more formidable with Verlander joining reigning ace Tarik Skubal, a two-time Cy Young winner, along with former Astros teammate Framber Valdez. The veteran brings not just talent, but a wealth of postseason experience — more than 226 playoff innings with a 3.58 ERA, highlighted by his ALCS MVP performance during Houston’s 2017 championship run.
Oddsmakers are already taking notice of Detroit’s upgraded pitching staff. The Tigers currently sit around +120 to win the AL Central, +900 to capture the American League pennant, and +2200 to win the World Series. Those numbers still place them in longshot territory nationally, but if Verlander can deliver another productive season, Detroit suddenly looks like a club capable of outperforming those expectations.
Despite his age, Verlander showed in 2025 that he can still compete at a high level. Pitching for San Francisco last season, he logged 29 starts with a respectable 3.85 ERA while eclipsing the 3,500-strikeout milestone. Currently sitting eighth on baseball’s all-time strikeout list with 3,553 punchouts, the veteran clearly still has plenty left to offer as he returns to familiar territory in Detroit.
